I am a US Army Infantry 1SGT in 1901, a Veteran of the Phillipine Insurrection who uses a .54 1841 Mississippi rifle to compete in rifle matches, beating men shooting Trapdoor Springfields and Krag rifles, the 1841 is the rifle that my father used in the Civil War when he was a Sharpshooter. I've been told I'm going back to the Philippines to be a part of a special unit to put down Moro insurgent groups and I'm bringing my .54 Mississippi rifle with me.

Would the military have let you do that? How would you have provided the ammo for it?
Ned Roberts did much to keep ml alive in early twentieth century, so that attitude toward your gun was not unheard of. I just wonder how the military would respond to a NCO doing this.
Of course a few years later Gen Patton was famous for his private ivory handled sidearms he carried.
