Howdy! My wife said that her dad gave her this beauty some time back (before we met). I knew it was in the closet, but never paid it much mind. Anyone know what I have here?

It appears to be a run of the mill Muzzleloading shotgun from the middle to later 1800s. The Richards name one the lock may have been used to make folks it was a higher end gun.

still it is a nice piece to have and depending on condition may be shootable. It would need to be inspected by knowledgeable muzzleloading gunsmith.
My comments are speculation and I’m sure others here can give better information.

Thank you!

I agree with Kansas Jake, and would add that this shotgun is in much better condition than most I’ve seen. If you remove the ram rod and push the key in the forearm out you can lift the barrels up and off. Look at the underside and there maybe marks that can add information on the gun.
