Actually the .36 gets the nod today as the preferred line pistol caliber, revolver, percussion or flintlock.
Piece of trivia, the Browning HiPower was originally for a 9.8mm automatic round.
Memory fails me but it may have been for a Romanian military contract.

Interesting part was that it was the same bore diameter at the .36 BP revolvers at .378".
