Rick, I would agree with you completely. When you think the ballpark time for invention of the French Flintlock mechanism was about 1630 and the strength of the trade guilds to keep their trade secrets secret it really did take awhile to get it completely together. The cock bolt and tumbler is for me a hold over of the thinking of the Snaphaunce. It does give you a nice canvas for engraving on the head of the tumbler bolt without a screw slot. All of these parts would have to be case hardened for them to work correctly. It's just fun to figure out how they worked and possibly why they didn't continue. Later,Hank

Greetings, first let me thank Pukka Bundook, Treestalker, and Shotgunblast for your kind words. I am not very good at reading and writing on computers. I had to chuckle at Rick's comment about trying to make early locks work as good as Jim Chamber's/Siler. Couple years back I made a Brace of Spanish Miquellet pistols. The locks I forged out of Wrought Iron Anchor Chain. For a joke at class in Bowling Green I put a card next to half a link of chain and wired to it a Siler Frizzen, announcing Jim's next kit. He thought it was pretty funny. Sorry if I didn't get the pics quite right. Later, Hank

Greetings,
Nice lock. TRS had/has a French 1650 period lock #691. I put x2 together currently. My only issue with them was that the tumblers were not correct for the lock so I made new tumblers and the correct "tumbler bolt" these early locks still had features of Snaphaunce. I also remade x1 Mainspring and both of the sear springs. It was a fun project. Later,Hank
Hank,

Those buttcaps are certainly different and very impressive. Are they available commercially or did you cast them yourself?

Greeting Cossack,
The Pommels were one offs. They actually had x3 Figure Heads, an Eagle, Lion, and a Grotesque Face under the beak. A friend had the opportunity to make the mold and shot the waxes and I took them to a foundry I've used in the past. Sorry about that. I know it's fun finding different parts to use on a project. Later, Hank

Thanks Hank, looks like a carve my own job then !
One more question, how did you attach them to the stock, are they pinned?

Greetings Cossack,
I hope these photos help. Later,Hank

Greetings,
I like the shape of the butt stock. He should be very happy with his rifle, having a father setting him on a life long interest is great. Your lock should work just fine I've made quite a few TRS locks. Hank

Oh what a lucky kid !! When I was his age during the late 1950's / early 1960's, I was running around with my toy Parris musket and a kepi hat. LOL

Rick

I regret selling that old musket but bills have to be paid. Glad to see the lock castings Chris made from it are making the rounds. The tumbler is odd I agree but that original spring was so hard it never had any trouble clearing the cutouts. I wonder if the spring was too hard. I imagine with a hardened spring and case hardened sear that the sear would cut the tumbler if left in it for a few hundred years.
