need help on butt plate design

I am basing my next build around this 1620's century Spanish firearm. I am trying to figure out how to make the butt-plate. I do not know if it was brass or steel . Just looking for ideas how to replicate it. A normal butt plate is pretty straight forward but this has the metal edge around it as you can see by the picture that is very smooth.

That band is separate from the butt plate. The buttplate is just made out of sheet and flat.

Ok thanks- that is a good idea. Might also explain the nails in the side.
