Been going on now for about 8-9 years. but now I am gonna to do it.
first I need to find a builder who can make a nice one.
Next question..So far I already have a .45cal and a .54cal.
So with that being said, I am considering getting my jager built as a .50. I know that might seem a little out of the norm for a Jager or is it?
I am also considering using a longer barrel to, something in the 33-35" range. I beleibe it may have to be a special order due to its length, unless there is a possibility of cutting one down at the breech.

Any suggestions on a Jager build?????

If you check with Track of the Wolf right now there is a very nice jaeger rifle for sale built by Harold Stansfield. It is priced very reasonable in my opinion. A very well made flintlock in .62 cal. Check it out!

I'd go with a standard colerain 31" jeager barrel in .54 cal. I had a .50 jeager yeras ago. It shot well, but I just don't like .50 caliber.
Getting custom barrels these days is difficult.

.58 is a good average caliber for a German rifle. 26"-28" is a good average for barrel length...unfortunately, no one makes one this short as regular production. The 31" one will do fine.

The .50 cal gun will be HEAVY. Trust me. The two words that should come to mind when thinking of German rifles are "ergonomic" and "Handy". They don't have to weigh a ton.

Why not ask Mike Brooks if he'll build it. You'll be hard pressed to find a better gunsmith.

I recently bought a partly finished rifle by Ron Ehlert. The Jeager is completely constucted and shootable as is, needing only minor shaping, finishing of the lock and furniture, and as much carving and engraving as the customer would like. And a wooden patchbox of course. The style and furniture are almost identical to Mike's rifle. .60 cal. 31 in. Davis Jaeger lock. I paid a bargain price for it, less than the cost of parts, and the finished rifle will reflect that.Black walnut stock, perfect grain strength. Any interest let me know. I have a website at www.billshipman.com to take a look at my work and get my e-mail.

P.S. As most of you know, Ron passed away recently. I would say he was one of the tops in the country as a gunmaker. Especially Jaegers. I'll put a Snickers bar in the patchbox. Those that knew him will know what I'm talking about.

Bill,

you are right. You got an incredible price on a terrific gun. I never had the pleasure to meet Mr. Ehlert or yourself for that matter but have admired the work of both. It is a good thing that an accomplished gunbuilder got the jaeger and will do justice to Mr. Ehlert's legacy.
