I just got news that my friend and mentor passed away this morning at 2 am. His name was Calvin Binkley, he helped me build my first flintlock and showed me an array of different shooting methods, horn making/ repairing, and metallurgy. A true craftsman of the highest order. He will be sorely missed.

As I get older, we all can see how valued friends pass on before us. I can think of two valued friends, that are not relatives, that I may miss someday should they go before me. Thanks for your comments.

Very sorry for your loss of a friend and mentor. True friends seem very tough to come by these days, and good mentors in the endeavors we discuss here seem almost impossible. You were blessed to have this friend and mentor,,, continue to honor him by making him proud, and he will live on through your words and deeds.
My condolences to you and to his family.

True friends are hard to come by, in our lives they are a treasure, the loss is very hard to deal with as I am sure you know. AS LONG AS A FRIEND OR RELATIVE IS REMEBERED THEY SHALL LIVE FOR EVER. Consider your time with this friend as a blessing very few ever know what a true friend is.

Condolences. I had a buddy like that a while back. We rode motorcycles as escorts for the gold star mom's at Rolling Thunder in DC. I did it for 15 years and Joe? A little over 10 years. He shot bows, black powder and hunted all the time. Thought we'd be friends for many more years. Best way to honor their memories is to keep doing what they taught us! Then show it to somebody else.

True friends and their memory are worth more than all the gold ever dug.

I feel privileged to honor your close friend and mentor Calvin Binkley. I am also honored to be beginning friend\mentor relationships with so many on this forum regarding building flintlocks, wads, powder, horn choices, bags, our general, mutual love for all things BP and the history of our beloved native land and the pioneers who went before us. Please find someone to mentor in Calvin’s name.
