Mostly correct. However rifle makers did make ‘rifle mounted fusils’ or smooth rifles that often could not be told from a rifle by that maker till one looked at the bore.Thank you,
Basically, my understanding is that a full octagon barrel was not used as a smoothbore, at least was used infrequently.
Would this be a correct analysis of information provided in this thread?

Adding to the confusion we’re some guns with worn barrels were ‘freshened’ in to smoothbores.
People rarely got glasses in this time frame, and most were ‘reading’ glasses’ I have a 20/200 left eye, shooting my smooth rifle I couldn’t shoot a flies eye at a hundred yards with that eye, but could plug a deer at fifty.
Many folks bought rifles as that’s what was found around them, but didn’t need to pay extra for a rifles barrel.
