During that time, some came with hideous carved buttstocks. Some years back, we saw one on a gunshow table & listened to the seller spin a yarn about the rarity and significance of the gun. Carving looked like it'd been done with a hatchet. Most every one I saw of that type had a face/animal head - some with tacks for eyes, etc. There were flintlocks with two-piece locks, the back portion a back-action and front half the frizzen. Still, it was a fun time.
