Mods on a New Pietta 1851

Purchased a new Pietta 1851 .36 Navy a month or so ago and finished the work on it last week. Its an all steel frame, brass trigger and hand guard model. But it came with checkered polymer grips! Which had to go!

I have to say that of the C&B revolvers I have, Pietta and Uberti, including the ones I've handled, I have never felt a smoother out of the box action. Right out of the plastic bag it was nice and smooth. I figured it could only get better, and it did. Got it all stripped, cleaned, and used Navel Jelly to remove the blueing and color case hardening. Which was nicely done had I wanted it that way.

There really wasn't much de-burring to do on this one, but I polished the channels, trigger, hammer, bolt, etc.
Re-washed and wiped it all down with denatured alcohol. Then using Kibler's Jax Black, I greyed the steel. Some parts took 2 or 3 coats, the barrel only needed one coat. I used 0000 steel wool to blend and buff the finish I wanted.

I have lots of Red Cedar at my camp and I use it for carving and other wood projects. Using the polymer grips as a guide, I cut out some scales and traced the outlines, then cut them out and started rasping and sanding.

The factory polymer grip comes in 3 pieces. This made the process much easier since I could measure off each side. And the middle section, the fits inside the back strap was marked and cut. Using the back strap to keep the pieces aligned, I used 2 short wooden pins and epoxy to get them together.

I finished the grip with DGW antique stain and linseed oil. And reassembled. The action and trigger pull is very smooth. And I replaced the factory nipples with SliXshots.

Oh, and I used Jax Brown on the brass. The Jax solutions are great.
Did some shooting with it Saturday and posted some photos of that on the thread I did on my Hawken build.
