Just got home from an Artillery School held up in Old Washington, Arkansas Fri-Sun. Attendence was lower than expected 'cause of gas prices they guessed, but we still had folks from Colo, Okla, Ark, Tex, Louis, and probably some I missed....We camped on the lawn of a restored 1850s house and outbuildings on the edge of the old town. We trained on a couple of 10 pounder Parrot guns. The instuctors were first rate and the camp cook kept us well fed on biscuits and beans and the like....It was blast! (pun intended). Plus, just being in the old town was worth the trip, Old Washington dates from the early 1800s and has not changed much. It is a State Park, that is muzzleloader friendly. It is the legendary 'home of the Bowie knife' and James Black's forge has been recreated and operates with two or three bladesmiths on site. Park officials treated us well and were very accomodating. There is a Civil War event there 1st weekend in Nov. If you are close by you ought to go see the town.....I live just two hours away, so I get there frequently.
