military uniforms worn by civilians

    During the Mexican War period, would ex military or veterans of service be allowed to keep their uniforms. In western movies you always see ex-military wearing parts of uniforms. Would that be accurate for a Mexican war civilian portrayal.

    I don't know if they were "allowed", They probably just did it anyway especially if they were deserting. Kind of like Jeremiah Johnson' s pants.

    For many/most enlisted military men, their uniform items were the only clothing they owned.

    They were their uniforms, purchased directly or withheld from their pay. So at discharge they just went home or where every in the only clothing they owned.
