I have a friend that shoots cartridge black powder competition at 600 to 1000 yards with baldwin sights. I have seen the competitors do it. I used one of the guys rifles and hit 6 out of ten rams at 500. Yes I absolutely believe guys like idahoron making those shots.

One club I am in have since 1992 held a match for muzzle loading rifle comprising the aggregate of 15 shots at each distance - 1000, 1100 and 1200 yards. I won it 2018. I've also won matches at 900, 1000 and 1200 yards with muzzle loading rifle. World championships are also held at 300, 500, 600, 900 and 1000 yards. Muzzle Loaders Association of Great Britain hold National Rifle Championships for muzzle loading target rifle at 200 - 1000 yards and for .577 Enfield rifle at 200 - 600 yards. NMLRA hold long range matches and the Oak Ridge match with shooting out to 1000 yards concluded last month. There's plenty of people competing at long range today and plenty of documentation of the same in the 19thC.
