Loading Block Dimensions

Howdy pardners. I’m going to make myself a couple loading blocks. 50 cal. By searching this forum I’ve figured out what size drill bit to use, but I haven’t figured out how thick I should make the loading block. Should the patch and ball be recessed or should it protrude? Any input you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

I like for mine to protrude just enough to index. The other school has the board thick enough to where the barrel is indexed via cut outs in the board.
