Those interested in history of early exploration of the US should get a copy (it's available in paperback) of Stephen E. Ambrose's Undaunted Courage; Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West. Was published about 2001 or so. Gives a wonderful image of what the Country was like at the time, and the world of Jefferson and Washington, DC in the early 1800's. These explorers were amazingly self-sufficient and inventive. Good mentions of medicine, Natives, travel, and BTW, they were all armed with Flintlock
muzzleloaders, including a big bipod mounted .69 cal. to be used to shoot at hostiles on the river banks while they traveled on boats. Great read!
