Hi Toot. Bob's right. They carried the ramrod suspended from the neck. I've never seen a pic of a period rod. There is an artist's detail of a mounted trooper showing this somewhere. But can't remember where I saw it. I would guess these pistols were loaded from horseback using preformed paper cartridges and an undersized ball. If so, it would not take much of a rod to load. Also, the ramrod would not get lost/dropped. Just speculating.
Toot: You're right. They spark great. The pistols were so heavy duty made it's likely why many if not most can still be shot today.

Rick, every thing you say is true. when you spark / dryfire one of them in the house the sparks almost set the rug afire. I am going to make a rod with a ring on the end of it and try it out. and you answered my question of using a paper cartridge with an under size ball. wonder what size it would be? thanks too all you guys who responded to my query.

Whoe !! Dave, what a beautiful cased pair. The case looks as nice as the pistols. LOL Shows how much work went into the original cases.

Hi,
There is a lot to building a good case.

The case hooks were cast. I carved them in wax based on an original set. Then cast them using the Delft clay system.

I think many folks don't realize that these cases were not for displaying the pistols but for transporting them safely. As such, the walls of the compartments for the pistols are shaped like a "V" with a flat botttom so the guns are snugly cradled in place and don't move. Finally, each case was supplied with a leather traveling cover.

Dave - Is that a period-style label with your name on it in the lid of that case? Great icing on a beautiful cake!

My goodness, Beautiful work...guess that's why I wouldn't, couldn't make one. Fantastic. Art lives amongst the people here: even the boxes that hold what we are all about. Bravo!
