Late 18th century hatband.

Most often when hunting-woods running I wear a beat to heck cut down round hat pinned up in the back. There is no hatband but am tempted to add maybe three feet of light cordage or leather lace as a band for emergency tying or as a snare if needed. Would this have been used in the backwoods say 1770-80.

I can’t imagine hatbands of some kind or another being used, where else can you stick a feather! I think anything that is made of period material can work, especially for a woodman, it just becomes part of the character.

I have one I Flemish twisted a horsehair hatband for use as a snare or whatever.

An 18th c hatband should be worsted wool, metal lace, or narrow silk ribbon.

Don't forget a couple of fish hooks, toothpicks, playing cards split by a bullet, a rabbit's foot for good luck, and a plug of 'baccy for hard times...

Does this mean you don't set snares pretty much every time you go for walks in the woods? Or are you saying it would be more period-correct to carry that stuff in a pocket or bag? C'mon, man!!
