This month is my first hosting the postal match. I have had a ton of fun participating in the last 3 matches, even winning my first one! Beginners luck I guess! Reading through past matches it would appear I have some big shoes to fill and I would like to take a moment to Thank Marc for all the work he put in to hosting them for us. Thanks Marc!

This month's target is inspired by one of my favorite plinking setups, standing bottle caps on edge on top of bottles and shooting them off.

Download and print your target attached below. Write your forum screen name on the front of your target as soon as you print it!

This is a six shot target. Fire 2 shots at each bottle.

Scoring will be as follows:
Inside the rectangle = 3
Circled area inside rectangle = 7
Bottle Cap = 10

I decided to add a mental challenge to this target by seperating the 10pt zones from the other scoring areas. You can play it safe and shoot for the center or risk it all shooting for the cap.

The shooting distance for this contest is 25 yards.
No do-over’s. Print and shoot one target only. One rifle and one pistol is acceptable.
Only registered forum members may participate.

If you would like please take a picture of your target and post it on the forum under this months (June) shoot to share with other members. However, to be officially scored and posted in the final results you must still mail in your target unless you are overseas as noted below.

Only traditional, open iron sighted muzzle loading firearms; peeps are allowed under the condition you mark your target so I know you used a peep. (Tracking it) NO Cannons. Percussion, flintlock or matchlock ignition only. Pistol will be in their own class. Cap and Ball revolvers are OK.

Single patched round ball only. No restrictions on caliber. (a patchless ball may be used if so desired)

Shots shall be taken off-hand at the stated distance. Standing or seated is allowed, elbows unsupported by anything other than the shooters torso. In the event that a member is not physically able to hold his rifle up unsupported, a "prop-rod" that is supported only by the shooters torso, no part of which prop-rod may touch the ground, may be used to hold up the fore-end of the rifle.

Only original targets will be accepted. No copies, faxes, scan, etc. unless you're an overseas participant...
Overseas participants may scan and e-mail me. Just send me a PM through the forum and attach it or I'll give you my e-mail address. As long as I can CLEARLY make the target out I'll accept it.** (I recommend using a dark backing paper when you scan / copy it if possible so that the holes show clearly)

Old Eyes - Small Targets, What To Do?
Considering the nature of the event being, a print and mail target and there being no prize other than bragging rights, the object is to encourage shooters to shoot and share their results, whatever they may be, in hopes we can all learn a bit. In September 2020 shoot participants overwhelmingly voted to adjust the rules to allow adding color to the target(s) to add contrast to better see the intended point of impact. This can be done at the individual shooters desire, this is optional.
Note: This may not be necessary with all targets but it has been adopted as a standing rule.

Pistol Class:
For those who would like, you can shoot one target with long gun and one with pistol. Please mark your target accordingly.

How close is close enough? Over half the ball must penetrate inside the scoring ring to be counted at the highest value. In other words, the ring in which the majority of the ball hits the target will be the score value. The center of the shot placement on the target will be determined by the judge. Judges decisions are final.

Fire 6 shots only, misses count! Mutilated targets or targets with more than 6 holes will be disqualified. If you have any questions, suggestions or concerns please don't hesitate to contact me.

Mail your target, postmarked no later than June 30th to:

Chris Duncan
1260 N Osage rd
Mulvane, KS 67110
Attn: June Target

If you don’t mind sharing I would also like to know what you’re shooting. Include type of firearm, caliber, ball diameter, patch thickness, lube, powder type and grains used, barrel length and twist rate. This isn’t required I’m just the curious sort.

Thanks for shooting and thanks again Marc for hosting our previous matches!

Chris

Looks like i will get decent weather here in kansas this weekend, does anyone have any objections to the host/ judge shooting in the match?

Chris

.50 cal Hornady RB P.T. patch with T/C Bore butter, 60 grains of Goex FFF
T/C Hawken flintlock.
4 hits and two misses.

I didn't even try for the bottle caps. It was a spectacular day here in Indiana, early Saturday morning, warm temps, sunshine. Had the range to myself, as I watched smoke drift down the firing line.
I will hang on to the target, I want to try the pistol as well later this month. Will mail both then. If the pistol target is worthwhile. I have a CVA Kentucky pistol, my Dad assembled from a kit. It does have sights, but I'm less then convinced I can hit anything with it. We shall see.

I really enjoy shooting the T/C. I wish is was lighter, and I wish it had a little longer LOP. Otherwise, for a production gun it's well made, and I like the ease of cleaning the hooked breach design.

I just got in from shooting mine, beautiful weather here in Kansas this weekend. I went hunting for bottle caps twice and hit paydirt once, almost put ball on ball on the center bottle but both went right of the 7pt circle. I was out of Old Eynsford so was shooting plain 3f goex, I think I needed to raise the sight a notch but didnt figure ot out til after I shot my target. Oh well, hindsight is always 2020. Next months targets will definitely feature larger aiming points, i'll admit these were a little small!

Shot mine today as well, no kidding this is a tough target! I put black dots on mine just to help get dialed in. Pedersoli Frontier .50 cal. 50 grains Triple 7, .490 ball, .015 patch. The wind was starting to really pick up after I finished shooting, or I would have been all over the place. My old eyes turn 64 next Friday so can't complain I guess. Agree, next month let's shoot some beach ball sized circles... :)

Thanks for hosting the shoot, RR

Ranchroper,
Just out of curiosity, do you still have the stock buckhorn rear sight on your frontier or has it been swapped with something else?

Chris

It's the original sight, I did change it out for a Skinner ladder sight last fall due to shooting low when the rifle was new, but went back to the original before Xmas and worked up the courage to file down the front sight. Took a little messing around but she shoots pretty good now.
