We were hunting just East of Sacramento, California. It was a cold, rainy day and a bit miserable. But I worked my way through the forest quietly, helped by rain-soaked leaves and grass. Coming up to a thicket at the top of a crest, I spotted a small doe lying in the middle of the thicket. Wind blowing into my face as I advanced, I saw no evidence that she knew I was there. Carefully I moved toward her until I was within five feet. She was not what I was hunting so, careful not to touch a noise maker, I reached out my ML and touched her on the rump. Wow! My world, and hers, erupted. She jumped as high as the brush around her and disappeared quickly down the slope. I had a good laugh and my buddy missed it all. Tough luck, Dave, Polecat
