When I was actively building guns I had a habit of accumulating "future projects". Shoulder injuries stopped me from building years ago and now that the shoulders are fixed I no longer have time to build. Now I need to reclaim my work space for business. So it's time to clean house. I'll be posting several barrels, locks, and blanks over the next few days. Maybe even tools too.
Jeager pattern precarve on a fairly basic, but not totally plain, walnut blank. Barrel is a rice Jeager profile with Forsyth style rifling. IIRC he only made a batch of like 20 or so of these. I could be wrong though, TBH I haven't checked. If you're not familiar with the concept the basics are it's a rifling recipe developed in the mid 19th century by a nutty English officer to use a very tightly patched ball over really large powder charges to hunt elephants with round balls.
Cal: .62; length: 31”; shape: octagonal, swamped; width of breech: 1 1/8”; groove width: .200”; land width: .040”; no of grooves; 8; depth of grooves: .005-.006”; rifling twist: 1:95. Max allowable powder charge: 200gr.
This is what Jason had to say about them when he was working up the design.
“I built a 62.cal with 1-95 twist. The barrel was tapered 1 1/8" to 1" x 34" long. It took 140 gr 2F before accuracy was acceptable. With 160 gr. three round (groups) were touching at 100 yds. The same with 180 gr. and 200 gr. The velocity with the 200 gr charge was just shy of 2000 fps.”
It will be a serious thumper when finished. I keep going back and forth about keeping it and finishing it....... "one day". But we all know how that is.
