@Harry Collins, since you like the handiness of the Jaeger rifle, you might be better advised to look for a fowling gun or a trade gun. These are often made in a caliber (20 gauge) that is smaller than the military calibers (12 to 10 gauge) found in muskets and are much lighter than a musket, making the fowling gun or trade gun much handier. A fowling gun can be loaded with round ball or shot. The round ball in a fowling gun is quite effective at the ranges you have encountered deer in your woods.

Yes! I was just looking at the French "Fine Fusil" kit from The R.E. Davis Company. I didn't squander my youth on education or family. I had one hell of a time. Unfortunately, I'm being paid back for the horses, football, war, and motorcycles. I have a consult with neurosurgery to kill the pain in back and hip. Plus I have a foot to fix. If these go well, I'll be back in the woods. Hope springs eternal. I may get the kit to give me something to do in convalescence.

I need to clarify. I have 2 separate barrles - it's a single barrel rifle. It would be way cool to have a SxS...
Make one it’s easy. Tack weld two tubes together and soft solder the rest. This one 29”
.6 bore barrels L&R locked bit of brass the wood old windows frames. Took me a couple of months. It’s ready for bear. Ha ha. Minrs just a wall hanger theses days Based on 1853 Reilly cape rifle. Just a bit of fun Enjoy

I have both, a 50 cal. long rifle, 44" Bbl. I Had it made about 8 years ago. 5 years ago I had a 62 Cal Jaeger made. I like the looks of the long rifle but it's to heavy for me now, I'm 76 years young. The Jaeger on the other hand has a Swamped Bbl. Everyone who has handled it says how comfortable it is and how well it points.
I don't hunt any more so I can't answer your questions on hunting, but In my opinion I would go with the shorter Jaeger

Yea that last bit has been my upbringing. Living on a farm you get used to hunting and butchering livestock so as long as the killing has a purpose there aint no harm. My Great Grandfather passed away in 2015 age 104 years old. He was so old that he served in the US Cavalry in the 1930s down in Nicaragua fighting the Sandanistas. I hope to live as old and become at least half of the man he was. He exclusively hunted with muzzleloaders only since thats all his family had growin up in his time. Thats what has me wanting to get into Muzzleloading. My Great Grandfather always said muzzleloaders are a gun for game and repeaters are a gun for war, and we dont make war on game.

Could always go for a combination gun, they were pretty popular in the Germanic States and Austria. This picture is one of Henry Tatham's. I'm basing the lock I'm working on now off of this one, the external, combination battery-main spring with the stirrup really suits itself to a double gun. Mr. Tatham, from what I've found, didn't put wood up under/around the barrels on his O/U's, but most of the Eastern French and Germans did.

I think OU is far better that a side by side as it’s not kicking to the left and right so I guess it doesn’t need regulating. , I am just guessing of course but it makes sense. After years of English doubles. I went over to Italian OU. Of courts posh English people would only use an English double.

then I think it was George V. That said “ a gun without hammers is like a spaniel without ears”

I have seen a few Germanic OU s. Flint and percussion at holts London auction fetching good prices “. They mainly looked a bit pitted and we’ll warn. With the usual deep riffling and smallish bores Alas last year they brought out lik a £60 annual fee to research their archives. No thanks

I wish you well

Are you looking for a flintlock, or a cap-lock? I would pay more attention to the build and function over the style. My first muzzleloader was a traditions Kentucky rifle cap-lock and I could take out a rock chuck at 100 yrs. My only complaint is I wish I had gotten it in a flintlock. I hate messing with caps.

Just do a swap and say fit am L&R lock might just pop straight in.

It doesn’t matter which rifle that you get first. Like most of us, you almost always get the other next and will be happy with both.
