I see several have used machinists chests for this purpose. I just finished modifying the top compartment of one adding two inches under the lid to accommodate a Howdah. Not too heavy to carry but my “range” is on my farm.

I think that our range boxes are like women purses, they go from little clutches that hold just enough supplies for a short round of shooting to a cargo bag that holds a years supply of everything that could possibly be needed. I have seen guys haul a box out that was on wheels and I 've seen guys come with everything they needed stuffed in pockets. Like most I fall somewhere in between. I found an old wooden tackle box that I customized for my cap and ball revolver and I use a modern, medium sized tool box with a top tray for my long guns. I try to bring only what is needed for the particular gun or guns that I will shoot that day but like many, if there is room in the box, it stays there. Never can tell if I might need 4lbs of powder or 700 percussion caps :doh:
