How do you thread horn tips?

For those who have made southern style horns with the threaded tips (hwether made of antler, horn, whatever), how do you thread those? They look like they'd be too odd-sized and the threads too coarse/large to use a typical tap and die set. How does that get done?

Not having threaded horn, but threaded wood dowels, I might try a dowel threading die.
