In between coats of finish and rust browning the new Fowler... Needed a useful wiping stick to go with it....
Always liked the looks of the bulbous ended ones.. easier to remove from the pipes and finished to just less than bore diameter.
Scraped these out of 5/8's hickory with pined and glued 10-32 brass and steel tips..Dark one was the model.....
Just had to make some by hand just for kicks. Hand fit to each gun.
It felt great to be back in my 7 th grade wood shop again..

Thanks Mike and LH...
Muzzle loading is a tinkers heaven!
So much can be custom and tweaked!

Dan, you did a great job on those! I have always admired that look myself. Your Veritas link goes to the home page. Were you looking at the "chair devils" on their scraper page? I could spend a fortune with those folks.

Veritas® Dowel and Tenon Cutters 3/8's
They have some useful tools there!

I clamp this home made scraper in a vice and run the rod across it.
sand paper to finish...lots of elbow grease.

Thanks Guy's..Brown truck stopped at the house this afternoon...
3/8 dowel and tenon cutter arrived early...

here's what it does..
5/8's square hickory.. socket and drive rod..cordless drill....
clamped the cutter in a vise..works like an over-sized pencil sharpener..
Much easier....

Making tapered ram rods has never been easier. I have these in 3 sizes - 1/2" 7/16" & 3/8". I start with the 1/2" then 7/16" then 3/8" for a nice even tapered end. They work great.

Local lumber yard...hickory..3/4" stock.... rip and plane to size..
Hard part is finding straight grain with no runout....
6" X 48"3/4"... 6-8 bucks... think I cut 5 or 6 out of that size board.

Right now longest barrel is 42 inches...

These last ones still needed to be hand tapered to 5/16's for the first 12-15" due to entry pipe and rr hole dia.

As a rule I use wood for the Fowlers....
brass... hollow & solid for rifles depending on balance point.

Keep a 3/8 X 48" hardwood rod in the truck as backup when out Fowling.

This dowel cutter takes the work out of a tapered rod build.

Good luck!... Send some pic's if you go this route.
