Presumably .56-56 Spencer rimfire, which is the most common chambering in the Civil War issued rifles and carbines.

Thank you Mike -just trying to get a little history on some of these my Dad collected. Was this used by both sides in the war. Would a lock plate be hard to come by?

Welcome, 'dog. The Spencer was issued to Union forces, and, of course, Confederates made use of any arms they could capture, but they were unable to manufacture proper ammunition for the Spencer, so had to rely on the small amounts of ammunition they were able to capture with the arms. The result was that any use of Spencer arms by the Confederate forces was very sporadic and limited, and had no effect on the progress of the war. It might be possible to find a complete lock, but you'd have to do some searching.

Sorry gang. I have to close this thread.

The Spencer shot a rim fire self contained cartridge so it does not meet the Forum's requirements for discussion.
