A couple of years ago I picked up a J Fordney barrel that appears to be off a Leman trade rifle. I see that I can get the parts to build a trade rifle using the barrel I have. I still have a little more research to do. Plus hopefully have Bobby Hoyt reline it for me. I wonder if there would be any interest in it, if I did this project. I still have a couple builds a head of it. Any thoughts?!

Sorry for the late reply. Just found this post. I am increasingly interested in all manner of "late Lancaster" style trade rifles. Using an original barrel is interesting. I expect the metallurgy is quie different from a modern barrel but obviously good enough back in the day. I'd be very interested in what Mr. Hoyt thinks of refreshing it. What is the length and caliber of the barrel? Is it set up for flintlock or percussion?

I need to call Mr Hoyt again. I thought about having it relined but I am considering just having it rebored to a 40 cal. It is a tapered barrel and shows signs of being a full length stock. It’s was a 32 or 34 inch but has had the breech cut off. The barrel still needs a little more shorting do to vice damage at the breech. So when finished it will probably be a 30 or 28 inch barrel. I am not sure if it was flint or percussion. Because it’s so short I am considering using it to make a clone of Chief Joseph trade rifle.
