Hello all, new member. While deconstructing a smoke house circa 1899, I found this in the dirt. A few questions:
1. Does anyone recognize that faint marking at the rear?
2. What is the best way to clean this? No sandblaster. So far I’ve been doing ketchup and vinegar, soak a bit, toothbrush and steel wool. As I get the rust off, I do not want to damage the actual piece.
I attached a few pics of how it was when I found it a week ago and now.
Thank you!

further research: looking like Josh Golcher, American Longrifle, started manufacturing 1840s. Maybe. :)
