Hello my name is cody and I an from New Mexico I am a water fowl hunter upland game and a Turkey stomper. I love to fish the Rio De Los Pinos or the Jemez. I love anything outdoors. I recently stumbled upon this forum looking for I formation on a rifle I have inherited from my great grandfather. I have never tried black powder hunting and I really want to get this rifle up and going. It is a .58 caliber rifle.

Welcome aboard! I have friends who live close to Albe. and I will be going there this weekend for an extended visit. I think you will like the .58 caliber, I have a Remington Contract 'Zouave' rifle in .58 that I'm considering shortening to a 'musketoon' length.

Abq is a crazy place I live just south of abq in belen in the country. Where I love to be. Is the .58 caliber enough for elk? I would love to learn to hunt with this specific rifle. I think it is just a beauty.

Welcome to the forum, this a great place to be for info on traditional muzzleloaders. I love New Mexico, especially up around Chama and Tres Piedras. Fished up there quite a bit. Chased elk up there several times. Yessir, a .58 is enough for anything in North America. I think if you go to the percussion sub forum and give information about your rifle, maybe post some pictures of your treasure, you will get lots of helpful information.

Chama is amazing I go up at least once a year on private land and fish the Los Brazos. Ojo Caliente has a nice spa for the lady in your life while you fish the Rio De Los PInos. I will give that a shot thank you!

Cody, what kind of .58 rifle do you have? Is it antique, repro? We need to know more so we can advise you on loads, etc. A repro with modern steel in .58 will just jerk the world out from under deer with a PRB, friend of mine uses a homegrown Hawken with a .570 ball, greased patch and 100 grains of ffg. please do not use any load in an antique without seeking advice here. I do not have experience with antiques.

Sorry it's taking me so long to respond I just got on shift and I work wonky hours. It's a repro Lyman great plains rifle from what it looks like I'll have to upload some photos. I also have pistol that came with it that I will have to deal with later.

A .58 caliber GPR! You have a magnificent hunting rifle sir. Do you happen to know the twist rate of the rifling? A slower twist rate and you have great patched round ball shooter. A faster twist works best with conicals.

What Patrick Thomas said. The GPR is a very nice Hawken styled rifle, and has a coil spring in the lock which should not fail until the year 2525, at least!
