Nice looking gun and a great deer caliber. There are shooters who put some sort of cushioning between the powder charge and the patched round ball. Sam Fadala used material from an old (inactive!) hornet nest, and I've used both Ox Yoke Wonder Wads or felt wads soaked in lube. The extra cushioning provides some protection to the patch. As others have stated (including you), it just takes more experimenting. Best of luck!
