"The Indian Wars" by Duane R. Lund. This book covers the earliest days (1600's) up to about the Civil War. A whole chapter on La Verendrye. French pathfinders, then the various NDN tribes and battles. All in the Northern Boundary (lake of The Woods) and some of Wisconsin.
