Has anyone ever heard of the above name? I recently found a .73 caliber cap and ball musket with what appears to be "gewerre verdin munchen" on the lock. I haven't been able to find it on the Internet at all???

    Gewehr is German for rifle.
    Munchen is Munich, in Bavaria.
    Perhaps Verdin is the maker.

I will ask my daughter. She did her PhD in Munich and lived there for six years.

She thinks the first r is likely supposed to be an h and is either worn or was not struck deeply enough.
Gewerre has to do with the Law of the Land in that era.
Craftsmen were sponsored by a ruler so that a uniform standard of work could be encouraged.
This marking could be a certificate of such an arrangement.
    In the end, who knows.
