FLINTS

One of the weekly ads from IMA (International Military Antiques) a couple of weeks ago said they were selling flints from that Nepalese cache by the pound. Seemed to be a mix from pistol to musket size, luck of the draw in a grab bag. I didn't order any, but you might check.

I ordered a pound. Paid extra for hand pick. Asked for rifle/ pistol sizes. Got a mixed bag, n most if not all were used n in need of a trim. I guess you really get what you pay for, sorta.

When trimming up used flints indirect percussion is the way to go then pressure flake to tune up the strike edge.

One caution, if you knap your own flints, wear a dust mask. Silica dust can be real bad for the lungs.

I wear this. Overkill perhaps, but it's what I had around.

one thing about caps, you don't get a flash in the pan. they are pretty Shure fire!

I should have video'd the lot I went shooting with a while back!
They went through caps like crazy while my flint fired every time....just saying, it all depends on the Operator

Most places , @toot, but not all regions have flint or chert. Having localized sources for flints boosted trade among the native tribes.

It's too bad she did not also supply us with a natural source of black powder - or steel for parts.... or perhaps a gun tree from which to harvest them.
