North African snaphaunce. The lock looks original, but it may be a put together tourist souvenir. These are almost impossible to date, they were made in small gun shops for a long time, and were used up into the 1950’s in some areas.

I have a similar gun I bought a few years ago, at an antique shop in Tangier Morocco, north Africa. Mine, I believe, is a rebuilt gun made from old parts. It is about .50 caliber, but was really never shot in it’s present configuration. I carried this out of Morocco onto a ferry boat and through customs into Spain with little problems, but lots of strange looks.

Yes I’m pretty sure mine is Moroccan too… are your bands down the barrel silver? They look it from pics. Yours is in better condition too, I do like these I just admit I’m sure mine will display well when I get it on the wall. Thanks for replying.

Hi Dan

Your musket is indeed from Morocco. It's usually identified as Afedali, from the Taroudant region and the Oued Sous Valley. The snapaunce lock was locally made and copied the English pattern (both English and Dutch patterns were both common). The gun probably dates to the early-mid 19th Century. But snaphaunce locks date to the late 16th Century. Hard to believe they were still in use there.
Okawbow's gun also being Moroccan, is generally referred to as Altit, coming from the Little Atlas Mountains region. It also sports a snaphaunce in the English pattern. By the way, very nice condition example.

Hopes this helps shed some light.

Rick

Looking at the cock/ frizzen relationship- this must have used a very, very long flint in order to strike the frizzen. Something seems off.

Hi Pathfinder

These locks do not have a half-cock position. So the hammer looks like it's "stuck" in an odd position. Also, the frizzen (battery) is not positioned all the way down on top of the pan. Typically, regular 1" musket flints work well with these locks.
