I dug out an old International Truck steering column the other day, it should make a nice barrel, I will now forge all the other bits. Rudyard is sending me some matchlock lock bits he made years ago, I will have something nice to copy now.
 
Depending on the distance you want to go in from the edge you can hold a pencil against a ruler and run the ruler along the edge. Works very well.
Can do the same with a piece of rod for curves but you need to be more careful to keep the pencil perpendicular to the edge. Basically this is the finger technique but with more solid set up.
