Here is my first flintlock deer taken Friday during the Iowa Early Muzzleloader Season. This has been a long time coming as flintlock hunting for deer in all kinds of weather the last two seasons has put me on a learning curve that has been somewhat "trying" :) I took her at 30 yards with my .45 caliber Virginia rifle. The prb and 70 grains of 3f proved very effective. I learned the importance of putting a new flint in before going out deer hunting. Don't ask me how I know this now!! Greg :)

Skychief, I will indeed be trying for a buck with this rifle but that will have to wait until December during the Iowa Shotgun Season. I had a Landowner/Tenant Doe Only tag for the Early Muzzleloader Season. Greg. :)

Well Jethro, in a nutshell I can tell you that it is entirely possible to completely miss a full sized deer at 5 yards ( or thereabouts) shooting down from a stand, when my flint goes bad and takes a couple yanks on the trigger before she sparks off!! That happened a day earlier to me! Changed the flint and the gun goes right back to shootin straight and making head shots on squirrels!! ( took a red bushytail on my hike out of the woods after taking my deer!). So as Paul Harvey would say.... "Now you know, the rest of the story". Greg. :)
