I only used the sealer on walnut and didn't stain it before or after the sealer and final finish. If I was adding stain, I would seal the wood first and sand it back to bare wood, stain the wood and then apply the final finish. I am just guessing on this because I haven't done it but this is the way I would treat walnut.

I have no idea on how this would work on maple and aqufortis but strongly suggest a few test strips would be in order in order before you proceed.
