With blunderbusses, you either get very expensive unshootable antiques, or bottom of the barrel head scratcher factory guns like the Traditions abomination.

Too bad Pedersoli doesn’t make an authentic blunderbuss. Getting one custom built is possible but I don’t know of anyone making barrels for them. The one or two guys doing it are dead or no longer taking orders.
Davec2 somehow manages to get barrels

as stated I like all BLUNDERBUSSES. IRON or BRASS, BARRELLED.

Mr. Toot, these images of one of my “sideways spud gun” is for your enjoyment.

Officially the ugliest muzzleloader I have ever seen LOL! Reminds me of those big shark whales.

They are referred to as “elliptical” blunderbusses. They are scarce because few were made. Why? Because they don’t create a unique oval shot pattern. No blunderbuss produces any different pattern than a shotgun of the base bore.

The swell at the muzzle only makes it easier to load in the dark, on the deck of a ship, or the seat of a pursued coach. While the shot pattern is not effected, they are undoubtedly an intimidating weapon. Particularly when produced when a front door is snatched open by a dweller wearing a night cap.

david.stieghten, thank you for posting it for me!! just when I thought that I have seen all of them , as said they are all the same-UGLY! well this one takes it, UGLY TO A NEW LEVEL?!! thank you so much for the post. and yes, I rely love it!!! BTW. ,I only have 3 of them. one with a very short butt, so as to be shot from the chest. the other ones a brass one and an iron one, has a some what short regular stock.

what ever the bore diameter is, before the bell, that is what the pattern will be. as stated the bell is only for ease of loading. using a RB. is just useless in them, you kneed all of the BUCK SHOT THAT YOU CAN GET.!!

That barrel doesn’t look very authentic. Not much flare compared to any original I’ve ever seen.

I emailed rice and they offer there 10 gauge blunderbuss barrels in a 16” length. I might just have to buy one.
The Pecatonica barrel is straight 12 gauge; the minimal flare is all on the outside. I guess if one wished to, he could get the muzzle re-worked so the bore matches the outside, but from what I have read, it doesn't change the pattern characteristics at all; just make them a bit easier to load in the dark. (as if I would.) Fun to shot, even if the proverbial barn door is safe from beyond 20 yd. or so. That said, I can usually hit about 3 out of 10 clays at 20 yd using a square load of 1oz 7 1/2 shot. It would be a great street sweeper with a handful of buckshot.

Neat but the purpose of the flare is it makes it easier to pour things down the barrel as you mention. Learning that barrel does not have metal removed in the flare and that it’s purely cosmetic makes me want it even less.

Karl from In Range just did a great video on blunderbusses. I want one really bad now!

Hi,
Those proofs are legitimate after 1811 and the gun is a utilitarian piece many of which still used flintlocks well into the 1830s and 1840s. The British military did not make the transition to percussion until almost 1840.

dave
By perditions flame some of us have not made the transition yet.

Rumor has it that Pecatonica Long Rifle is working with Rice Barrels on putting together a 4-gauge blunderbuss kit that will be available in a couple of months. I expect that to be a pretty good set of parts.
Based on your post I called and talked today with Doug at Pecatonica. They are available now and had already shipped some. Starts at around $1k USD depending on wood. Davis Fowler locks.

Well, I eventually got round to removing the thick brown varnish/paint on this gun; I wouldn't normally interfere with the finish on a gun, but this one really did need sorting. This is my first attempt at 'French polishing' or shellac, if you like. Removing the old paint has shown a lovely stripe to the wood, not unlike Curly Maple; what wood, do you chaps, think this might be??
