Picked these up today. The barrels say Handmade by William (Bill) Alfred Frederickson 1930-2004. One is 56" long with a 40.5" barrel and .36 cal. and has a button on the bottom of the stock to open the door. The other is 64" with a 48" barrel and I can't figure out how to open the door.

Thanks all.

These are gorgeous guns.

I found the same grave marker, but nothing about Mr Frederickson.

Attached are a few more photos.

Any suggestions on testing the safety of shooting? I am an experienced shooter, but brand new as of yesterday to black powder.

I thought I might see a small detent on the bottom to release the patch box but I don't see one in the pics. Have you checked to see if you can push in one of the screws? Sometimes patch box releases are hidden. Perhaps he disguised the release by making it look like a screw head. Another option might be to unscrew the butt plate to see if you can open the patch box, or at least determine where the latch is.

Can we see a picture of the release on the rifle that you know how to release the patch box lid? I think Daryl is on the right track. Most of the screw heads have some form of corrosion around the head. The front screw on the toe plate has considerably less. Have you tried pushing in that screw head or the very tip of the toe plate?

I just unscrewed it all. I don't think it's corrosion, I think it's overzealous brass polish!

Any suggestions to test safety for shooting?

They look plenty good to shoot to me but an old trick is to tie it to a tire set up to fire and tie a heavy string to the trigger. If you can get behind some kind of barricade.

I don't see any release rods or catches. It appears that the lid spring holds the lid down. From your picture of the butt plate,

it appears that the lid is a bit higher than the plate. You might be able to use your fingernail to lift the lid.
