There are so many factors that enter into this that are not know.
But if you have it loaded up good and using a patched lead ball, with a firing angle of 30 degrees you might be able to get a mile long shot as a guess.

Seriously...........Get the best group you can off the bench at 50 yds. , say 4" with that big ball. Hold dead center on the orange. Big balls require say 90 GR. ffg to even begin to shoot out to even a hundred yds. . Get some tall white craft paper and staple it together , vertically. Put a 4" X 4" square of orange duct tape on the upper piece of craft paper , shoot and see if your on the paper. If the group is accurate enough , pick a distance and sight in for it.

Traditions .69 cal. Shoots well. How can I determine how far the ball is traveling?
You don’t mention your muzzle velocity or the angle barrel elevation, a couple of important factors. Just for jiggles and kicks, using a ballistics calculator, a .675” diameter roundball with a MV of 1200 FPS sighted in at 200 yards, the ball would be about 2’ high at 100 yards, 9’ low at 300 yards and about 30’ low at 400 yards. Don’t know if that helps?

@deerstalkert , how tall is your brother-in-law?

Did I mention that the Tradition 0.69 is a Naval cannon?

Please guide me on how to post a picture.

Naval cannon? If we're talking scale models with a short barrel, not nearly as far as say a musket with a longer barrel. Still lethal, fun, and unpredictable until you get to shoot it somewhere with a really good backstop (or an ocean). If You were in my neck of the woods, I'd suggest a really large, dry, plowed field devoid of farm equipment. That would be a hoot.

I have a Traditions 'Old Ironside' in .69 cal which I shoot in competition and also a postal league here in the UK. We have fairly strict protocols in competition but on one occasion I was interested to see what my cannon would do at 50 metres.
I had a spotter and aimed slightly higher than I would at 25 metres (normal competition range). To my complete surprise the shots were going considerably higher at 50 meters and I ended up aiming about 4 to 6 inches lower than normal to get them on target. I am still at a a bit of a loss to understand why this was happening but a seasoned miniature cannon shooter reckons that the shot is still accelerating at 25 metres, hence the higher than normal strikes. I have never choreographed the cannon but I am using 60 grains of Swiss 1 powder, a .028" lubricated patch with a .695" round ball. It's certainly lively and would easily recoil enough to leave the table I use. Just out of interest we are not officially allowed to shoot at 100 metres although I have no doubt it would easily reach.

Looks like a totally fun thing to do. Tho' it's probably not a holiday where you live (UK), mini-cannon salutes would be great here on July 4th. Had no knowledge of small cannon competition before your post. Thanks.

Yes we are fairly lucky here in the UK although the general opinion among fellow shooters is we are only tolerated by the Police and Home Office. It's getting more and more difficult to shoot anything and the proposed lead ban would be a major problem to us.
Competition-wise, as a member of the MLAGB (Muzzle Loaders Association of Great Britain) we are able to shoot most things that we are allowed to own, particularly Rifle, both Military, Civilian and pure target and Pistol, Percussion, Flint and Matchlock (pistols are virtually 100% Target). In addition we have in the last few years included Miniature Cannon. This is thriving and at last count we had 12 competitions throughout the year with a specific Postal League running alongside. Virtually all the precision shooting is traditional best 10 from 13 with shots needing to be 50% or more over the line to count as the higher score. Cannon shooters have a number of fun targets that they shoot at to vary the interest a bit, in fact my Avatar is one such target. We manage as best we can but I firmly believe that the proposed lead ban will make life very difficult in the future. When I say proposed, I am pretty sure it will happen, anything that is good for the 'environment' is onto a winner. Correct me if I am wrong but surely lead comes out of the ground in the first place??
