Hey everyone. Bought this awhile back and decided to try redoing this assembled kit. Somehow the stock swelled during refinishing. Not sure if that was from the stripper I used or the Birchwood Casey stain and tru oil. Anyway, had to inlet everything again to get stuff to fit. My last issue is the ramrod won’t seat due to the tube (pipe?) swelling. Unfortunately I don’t have a drill bit that is long enough. You think a hardware store would have what I need or should I order from somewhere? Or am I going about this the wrong way?

Obligatory build pics:

The last two pics are how it currently looks vs. the day I picked it up.

One other question, I am making a ramrod from a dowel and will pin caps on it. Any ideas on reducing the diameter of my dowel without a lathe? Right now I’m just whittling on it. Be gentle, this is my first build. 😂

a hand drill!

I opened up my ramrod hole with a dowel rod slotted for a small piece of sandpaper.. Cut a small slot and install a sliver of sandpaper. Might need to reduce the end, like you're doing for the ramrod you are working on.
Insert dowel rod into drill and spin a way. When it gets looser, try a larger piece of sand paper so it might overlap itself and try to spin again. might use a dab of glue to make sure the sandpaper doesn't get lodged in the hole.
On ramrod us drill as a portable lathe. chuck up ramrod and spin with using sand paper or file. go slow and check often.

The sandpaper trick with a dowel rod, that’s slick. Thanks for the tip!

Learned a lot from this project. Made the ramrod a tad long for ease of removal at the range. I’ll keep an eye out for an OEM rod on eBay or build a shorter one for looks someday. I’ll stain the rod tomorrow as well. Finished product:

Honestly? You've sanded the lock panels off. Yours is a typical re-furb, I'm not trying to be snarky,, you offered the photo's.
It's good to make the ramrod proud,, but not a full inch.
Re-do the ramrod before you finish it.
Everyone worries about the woods finish, while not caring about the fit.

Stay in the hobby friend,, keep on doing research to improve.
You have the "internet" today, so look it up,,
I have that didn't when I started

Well, it was a kit someone had already put together. The lock panels were already sanded off before I got to it, as seen in the before picture. The bore is rough as well. Started this before I was here and I have zero experience with what is correct or not. The books are on the way for that. No offense, but it’s hard to figure out what’s right or wrong if you don’t know the names of the offending parts.
The more I play with the ramrod the more I agree. Too much sticking out like that will eventually lead to me having a shorter ramrod sans tip if it gets bumped wrong.

One other thing too on the lock panels. The original assembler of this kit also must have broken a piece off the stock around the lock since I can see into the lock from the top while this thing is in one piece. I assumed from that alone the stock was a lost cause but this was a learning tool. I wasn’t too keen on spending $60-80 on a stock to just make the same mistakes.
