Here's another nice piece of leather from my craft archives, a No. 2 grade 14 square foot hide of "german tan" leather that I bought some years back from Crazy Crow, which still describes as the closest thing to braintan, but better: "The great advantage of German Tan Buckskin over traditional brain tan buckskin is that it does not have to be smoked to allow easy re-softening after becoming wet; even easier than the best smoked brain tan!"
The hide is just over six feet long, just under three feet wide at the widest point, and my micrometer shows it about .050 thick. Guessing it might be a good choice for leggings -- especially doubled -- or other uses where the leather must be thin enough to be flexible, but thick enough for strength. I believe the hide was graded No. 2 because of the mottling on the back side-- insect bites? $80 shipped priority.
