I’ve wanted a Fullstock Early Hawken Styled Plains Rifle…for many many moons. Cannot wait to hold it and get it sighted-in
Are you currently tackling the Kibler Kit? Id like to know your thoughts as you progress with it. I have a GPR rifle 54 cal flint with the L&R RPL lock in it also has a set of Davis triggers. Its a great gun to shoot but I would like to have a little smaller rifle in 40 or 50 cal as I dont need anymore calibers. I have thought of just getting a Pedersoli Frontier in 50.

I work on the Kibler when I have time…my wife and I watch the grandkids for my daughter. School starts in a month, so more time then.

The Kibler is an amazing product, I still cannot believe the quality of this kit gun. The parts are near perfect quality, the stock is unlike any piece of wood that I have ever seen…I know I’ll be getting a couple more Kiblers, in time.

If I sat down and poured my time into the kit, finishing the kit could be done in a week or less. With experience, much less…Right now I’m taking my time…not in hurry. But I must admit, I cannot wait to take it to the range and shoot it.

Small game hunting with this SMR…will be memorable

The preorder period has passed, for club members. I spoke to the guy on the phone. Real nice guy, he’ll be setup at the meet and selling powder and supplies to the general public during the state shoot, until his supplies run out or the shoot is over. If you are going to be in the FT Lupton Area and you would like to pickup some shooting supplies…here’s a source.

I Got The Call…

Last night, as my wife and I were getting ready to go to a wedding (my Gawd August weddings are hot), RAY CALLED.

My gun…is done!!!! I told Ray, I’d be able to pick it up on Wednesday, at the earliest (my schedule is insane this week…It’s not fair, I’m retired now). But Ray is going on a short trip with his son…so yeah, flew out of the house and picked up the gun on the way to the wedding. Ray is north of Loveland, wedding venue is outside Berthoud. My wife missed her calling as a NASCAR Driver.

It’s cloudy and a bit overcast this morning, so images are what they are…

For reference, my .54 calibre Dixie Tennessee Mountain Rifle is the upper gun. The Tennessee has a 15/16ths 36” barrel, after market Siler Lock, weighs right at 8 1/4 lbs, and has standard iron fittings for this product, from Dixie.

My .54 calibre Early Plains Rifle has a 15/16ths 33” barrel, L&R late English lock, Early Style Hawken Trigger Guard, Bridger Style Buttplate. The rear sight is a long style adjustable sight (I do not recall exactly it’s details). The fittings are antiqued iron. The stock is a #3 Grade Curly Maple.

The feels to be around 7lbs, with the balancing point right before the rear sight, at the entry thimble.

In January…I’m headed to Texas to visit my son and take a long time item off my bucket list…I’ll be hunting hogs with my son and my dad, with this flintlock rifle.

Cannot wait to hit the range.

Im a member down there Rock I never got that email. I might have ordered some stuff to get more caps.
They sent out a group email to all club members early last week. Do they have your email on file? Do you get the regular email updates on club activities?

They sent out a list of club members and their contact information…did you get that list? I had to contact Linda directly, because for some reason my email kept rejecting the one they sent…

This lock on my new Early Plains Rifle…well it has a pretty small pan, tiny target for the sparks to hit.

That had me thinking…so with my wife’s help, I shot a short 9 sec video…then went frame by frame to see where are the sparks being directed.

I captured 2 images, that I think tell the story best:

Above is the initial shower of sparks, I’m pleased with what I’m seeing. Looks good, sharp flint, evidence of a good solid frizzen. The roller bearing on the frizzen spring really serves to open the pan quickly.

Great to see those sparks being directed right into the pan and rattling around. I have no fears about powder not igniting anywhere inside that pan…cannot wait to take this firearm to the range. Maybe next week…

Fun little experiment.

Since I got the gun, each night, I’m wiping the bore with a patch soaked in BreakFree CLP. First night I cleaned bore completely. Basically was just cleaning out all the gunk from the machining process…the next couple nights, as the CLP worked its way into the micro pores in the barrel, when I wiped the bore, more gunk was being displaced…tonight, clean patch.

The Colorado State Muzzleloading Shoot starts this Friday, August 12th, 13th, 14th

Beautiful day today at the range. 66 degrees at 8:00 am this morning, 84% relative humidity.
F709DC41-7D8C-4320-ACCC-F52BB725CCA2.jpeg

Started out shooting at 25 yrds. 1st shots were touching at the 5:30 position. Adjusted my sights by filing the front sight down about 1/8” and adjusting the rear sight to the middle setting. The next 3 shots opened up something fierce, had me nervous.

Relaxed, best I could and settled in for a solid hold and the last 5 shots grouped into a single hole in the bullseye

I do not know where the shot in the white came from; maybe it was my dad shooting offhand, got the targets mixed up. Not sure…it’s a wonder-meant

At 50 yrds my groups really opened up. I had a flier and it started spot grouping. The above image is a 7 shot group.

So I took some valve grinding compound a burnished the bore, until it was smooth the entire length of the bore.

CD9E7CB1-ADF1-4621-9A86-FCB42067D7E1.jpeg

I set up a new target and the next 4 shots were much better. I taped them over, and adjusted my sight down one step for my next 6 shot group

For this next 6 shot group, my shoulder was tired, and for some reason I was drifting my shots to the right. Time to stop…but not bad for my Early Plains Rifle’s first day at the range.

Today’s load: .530 RB, Blue Pillow Ticking Patch, Moose Milk Lube. 75 grains ffg

Nice job Rock. Is that a new bench I see there. Or did the 2 guys bring there own
The state shoot starts Friday…so there are a couple of these older shooting benches, that have been pulled out of the storage shed, and scattered along the shooting line. There looks to be a new loading bench…square bench not the long rectangle ones. Even the archery range is setup ready to go…I’m looking forward to seeing it.

Anyone have the address for the range where the shoot is? Do I need to be a member just to come out and observe? Should I bring the rifles?

Coming down Hwy 85 from the North, you will come to the first stoplight at FtLupton. Turn west, agricultural fields to the north and industrial businesses on the south.

Drive about 200 yrds, to a dirt road, called Historic Pkwy, that goes north along the agricultural field. I believe there is a big fence to the west…drive by the barn, and the trading post (Fort)…the road will take you right to the shoot.

The map below shows the area, but cuts across a farmers lane to the Fort, instead of going to the light, and turning there. The range is across the bridge at the northern end of the map
