For non-tight-fitting bullets, like expanding balls or compression bullets, that load by dropping down the barrel, CO2 works great. At competitions, we use CO2 fire extinguishers with a special fitting. But I have used the handheld models with great success also.

They also worked with my .50 flinter .50 cal with .490 RB and .018" patch. The hand-held model does not tend to work so well if there is powder behind the ball though.

Dribbling in the powder works pretty good too.

Those extinguishers at the N-SSA range are filled/refilled with compressed air. I use a handheld CO2 discharger of a type no longer made and powder or not it works the same. Disclaimer; I have never tried it on a flint gun.

Think how many balls a 20 pound cyl of CO2 will remove. Charge the dry ball-e $2.00 to clear it make lots of money.

Worried about CO2 costs don't get into paint balls. my sons big 5 ft tall CO2 bottle costs 25 bucks a year to exchange for a full one. Use it for paintball and for euthanasia on live trapped animals in his AC company

Refill discharged CO2 extinguishers with compressed air, nearly free and that'll clear a lot of guns. You can still hit them for $2. They are good for 900psi so filled to 150psi they are safe to transport in your car or store in a shed in the hot sun.

I bought one at the Log Cabin, but it leaked and never would work to blow out a patched ball. I use it to blow out patches and make sure the flash channel is free of oil.
