Cleaning rod idea.

Here’s a cheap, easy to make and effective rod end

the working end is simply string, well epoxied and wrapped around tight.
Rod is 1/2 inch dowel, good for most smoothbores.

That’s why we use muzzle guides!!
Maybe I should have stated the obvious, the cleaning patch wraps around and is retained by the epoxied string.

Also an idea for a field fix if ever needed (broken wood ramrod, for example). Find a decent stick, bark it, wrap string/cord tightly around one end to make up a workable diameter, and go to town!

Given the lack of epoxy in that situation, tighter binding might be advised.

This is a hickory rod with notches I cut using a flat mill bastard file. You can wrap whatever you like on it. I use 0000 steel wool to polish rough barrels. Too easy.

This’s the handle end; a piece of Iron Bark from the firewood a couple of years ago.
Burns almost as hot as coal and harder to split.

OP did mention it works well with smoothbores. Don’t know that it would work as well with rifled barrel that is crowned…

Iron Bark is an Australian Eucalyptus , It is a very hard wood and is rot and insect resistant . Here in New Zealand we used imported Iron Bark for railway sleepers , Telegraph poles ,stock yards , house foundations and best of all wooden floors which would not mark or scratch .

Only smoothbores I have are shotguns and they aren't crowned. I suppose any barrel could wear some if the shooter wasn't properly cleaning it. I do all my shooting offhand, so I figure any defects in the round ball or other irregularity might cause my shot to go to the center of the bull despite my barrel wobbling around!

I have seen old hammer guns in cases with cleaning rods done like this except the string is twisted strands of copper wire wound around the rod , always with a handful of hemp tow in the case as well .
