Well, I went and done it about 3 hours ago. Yup, shaved off my beard after 8 years. It went through many mutations, from short full beard to Russian monk/mountain man, to long Van Dyke to short Van Dyke (most recently). Yup, I'm a colonial from my area (western Mass) and it just had to be done. At lesat I waited until my hair was long enough to tie back in a respectably lengthed pony-tail (what did they call 'em back then?)so I can look and feel PROPER!

From an Indian's point of view I would have to agree with Lennowoxie but the answer sought here is "clubbed".That's OK since the hair is still long enough for a decent scalp. :v

Is the hair "Clubbed" before or after you meet him Okwaho? :rotf:

A scalp is best taken after it is well clubbed. :hmm: :rotf:

FWIW in the 18th century, a man was considered "clean shaven" when he only shaved twice a week. Normally it was done on Saturday to be ready for Sunday Service or Friday for Jewish and some other religions. It was done a few days later for the second time each week.

For a spell, the Brits had a beard tax for all but the poorest peasants.
(tvey could not afford to buy a razor or pay the tax).
That could explain the lack of full beards in colonial days.

There were no doubt some, who like myself, loathe shaving, and consider it to be an expensive, dirty, nasty, vile habit, and refuse to join in.
(also Leviticus says we shouldn't "trim the corners of our beards" which I read as "don't shave".)

Based on my photo in my avatar...which time period do you experts think I need to focus on?

I guess I will need to put some rifles up for sale in the classifieds. Or my smooth bore...flint locks for me? Late Lancasters or S. Hawkins?

I really don’t want to do Civil War...

Yup.....I would have said Civil War at the earliest. But Spanish American War (you're still a Civil War veteran) might be better, strictly speaking.

And me? Mostly I wear a beard similarly styled. Except when it's time to play dress up, then the beard goes. It's back a month later.;)

I took too long to grow this thing! I have a pic of three of my grandfathers, plus one that was an in law, from the late 1890s. Their beard/mustache/goatees put mine to shame.

Well I guess I can sell my fringed frock coat...

    Great discussion!

    Sir,
I'd be willing to pay for even a black and white xerox copy of this article. I've contacted Muzzle Blasts about getting this back issue or copy of article and have never heard back.
