    Ge let's talk about the "native americans" since they were here first, and no one is kissing their asses now or booing for them.

    I do think those ‘southern racists’ would make the only Indian General In the war. General Stand Wait. I’m thinking he was the only general of an American Army.

    I tend to agree with that JJ, (kid dynooomite!) of course I could be wrong. I am a strong supporter of states rights, though my kin were for the North, had I been alive I may have supported the South on the issue of states rights, however, I am against slavery. Would I have been back then, who can say? Like most who fought in the war, I would probably have been an uneducated farmer with an elementary school education, if that!
    The Dred Scott decision pretty well domed the country to civil war.

    I remember a npr story on the opening of the slavery museum in NYC. They interviewed a young( teenage to early twenties by her voice) who said she would never have owned slaves if she lived then.
    NPR did a piece on how racism still existed since people who were white could sympathize with the black slaves but could only think of them selves historically as white.
    I thought something different when I heard this.
    She wouldn’t own a slave, because?
    She was a young girl and young girls didn’t own much real property then?
    Because she did not come from a family that could invest one to four years wages in a slave?
    Probably not what she was thinking, but a moral outlook that slavery was wrong.
    I might compare it to global warming politics today. A few people are vocal about it on their side. Most people don’t think about it much. Few of us own our own personal jet plane. And even someone vocal about it would take a trip to Tahiti on a private jet if given to them. OAC has a big carbon foot print. While that in of it self doesn’t negate her argument it does give us a viewpoint on how slavery or a big carbon footprint was/is so entangled with our society that even the most vocal critics can’t escape it.

    Evolution selects for people who can live together in peace, we have an inbred reluctance to kill our own kind.
    But the need of the social structure may require us to kill, and teaches us to. But from gangster to soldier we keep our humanity.
    That war, in fact most wars,are full of kindness by men who minutes before would happily stick a foot of steel in the others guts.
    The Christmas soccer game on the bloody fields of France comes to mind. Or the confederates and Yankees yelling ‘keep your heads down yank(reb)’ before the first shot.

    I'm presently a member of a Civil War forum (initals CWT). I really don't wish to name any names but this forum has gotten a little too political and anti-south for me. I had in mind discussing the actual Civil War not the cause on a daily basis. Or rather what a whole lot of members perceive as the Cause. "The Confederacy was nothing but slave holding traitors"....over and over (and over) again. Anything positive said about any prominent Southerners is looked at as part of the Lost Cause Myth. The Yankees have taken over and I'm tired of being preached to but will probably remain a- not-so-active-member. Any suggestions out there as to a more moderate forum? Something a little more "South Friendly".

    I'm somewhat taken back. I suspected there were a few dissatisfied "forum lurkers" out there. But I didn't think I hear from so many this fast.

    We create history in our own image.
    I THINK that Lincoln was a traitor to the constitution;
    That the states had the right to self determination;
    That our founders would have seen succession as a natural right;
    that the army officers that left the army did so from a feeling of loyalty that the state demanded a higher loyalty then the federal government;
    That the poor who fought fought for property rights, the government that took a richmans slave could take a poor mans milch cow.
    I have such strong feelings about that it’s hard to be sympathetic to the north. I honor the brave boys in blue who fought for what they believed in as being heroes but I think their cause was wrong, horribly wrong.
    So,
    Onany forum that would be my point of view. I can recognize that folks who saw the north as right and the south as traitors can be just as passionate about it.
    The south was outnumbered about 4-1 back then. And so it remains
    I take comfort in the words of Lazarus Long. “The majority is never right” and “democracy is based on the idea that a million men are wiser then one man, hows that again?” .

    Definitely not! My ancestry has some deep roots in the South, and I'm not going to let anyone pull them out.

    It does seem "Southern Bashing" has become the norm on at least one of the Civil War forums. You can hardly display a little pride in your ancestry without being called down or belittled. Tell 'um that you wave the Confederate Battle Flag and watch the reaction !

    I have family that fought on both sides and deep roots in Ohio and Rhode Island. I grew up in California and New Mexico. Lived a hunk in Arkansas, now in Missouri.
    My ‘devotion’ to the southern cause is based on readings of the seventeenth and eighteenth century economist and political philosophers that inspired our founders.
    Everything our founders wrote about breaking away from GB applies to the south.
    Had the colonies lost and our founders died on the gallows the ARW would have been reduced to a war fought so settlers could push in to Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee, a war of greed.
    I FEEL that’s what’s happening to the WBTS. And it sickens me.
