Here are some photos or original 1860 Army revolvers. It looks like the groove was a standard feature.

It's my guess that it was put there to help the shooter guide the cap onto the nipple with their fingers.

Unless someone can let me know that I'm wrong, they didn't have cappers back in the 1860s. AFAIK, they put the caps on with their fingers.

I have read that Colt made cappers but can't fine where I read it or any pictures. But if Colt could invent the revolver I am sure he could come up with a capper.

Hey thanks, I knew they had to have them back in the day just could not fine one.

Bump for a great thread.

Thanks but after posting this information on DIY cappers, I've discovered the Polish capper. I liked it so much that I got several of them for my different guns and some for friends.

They are great folks to do business with. Some may be nervous about sending money overseas but I've made several purchases and always got the capper. The longest delay has been with customs but the capper is worth the wait.

The Polish capper is light years ahead of my DIY capping solution; which I don't use anymore. It looks like they have a new and improved capper. I have the older brass models which are fantastic. According to their web site, they still have the older brass model.

Here is their YouTube channel. It looks like they have a new and improved capper. I have the older brass models which are fantastic.
