chambers Virginia rifle

Is this rifle a good choice for this era, and if so how fancy would the carving and engraving be?
Also any other choices or recommendations? I would be looking at portraying a farmer/hunter/fighter

Sorry, I don't often watch the F&I war board so I'm a little late on this one.
I would get the mark Silver Virginia rifle or the Ed marshal gun. Either one should be had in a large caliber as they get pretty heavy in anything below a .58. These are both high quality kits and go together well. I've built a pile of them. In fact I'm building one of the Mark Silver kits right now in .58 cal.
I'd stick with the Chambers kits if you're not real familiar with building flintlock guns. These kits have quite a bit more done on them than many ofthe others on the market.
Here's a Mark Silver Virginia gun that I did for a fellow several years ago. he wanted a brass box on it so it dates to 1765 to 1775, a wood box would get you to the F&I war era......or at least people wouldn't be able to give you too much grief about it. It's probably a little over engraved for the period, but the carving may be close for a little higher end gun.

Thanks everyone for all the input. When my check comes from TOW (had a gun on consignment) I am going to purchase the chambers Virginia. I got the Ron Ehlert dvd on building the chambers kits. My only complaint is, man does he make it look easy! I am also looking at getting the book rifles in colonial America Vol II. Another question for you guys is are there templates available for carving the wood and engraving. Or are there gravers out there that I could send the hardware to be engraved?

Is the forend of the Marshal kit made as a two piece unit? It looked like there was a close up of the splice in the photo's. Is this following the origional in pattern or salvage of good wood?

I did this on a build once and I would like to know I am in good company.

There was a HUGE hollow knot there. I cut it out and patched it. I'm a lot better patcher now then I was back then. :haha:

I found it when I was looking for some information on Pipe Hawks. Well I would like to update you all. I did purchase the Chambers Virginia shortly after and started to work on it. I cant' remember exactly how far I got but It then sat in my closet for the next 17 years. I moved to Michigan for 5 years in 2013 and then back to Wisconsin in 2018. Last winter I decided to get it completed. Since the time I bought it I stopped working on firearms and building guns and for the last 17 years have been hunting with a Hawken that I built. So I called all the builders that Chambers had on their list and no one had the time to put it together but one, And he did, and he did a fine job. Shoots like a tack driver and it was worth the wait. I got it in May and shot it this summer and hunted with it but did not kill anything.

Welcome back and you ended up with a beautiful rifle! The Chambers Virginia gun was always one of my favorites. I built one in 06 or 07. My only complaint was the length of pull was a bit long. Otherwise, like everything else from Chambers….top quality!

Following the discussion, the development of the truly "American Flintlock Rifle" is much latter then most people want to believe. This is because of the War of Independence/Revolutionary War myth that every Colonialist was armed with a "Rifle". I have found this thread interesting, especially in light of some discussion I have been following elsewhere on what is representative of the flintlock rifles used during the 1775-1783 war. Use of flintlock rifles in the F&I War was probably very limited.
