Claypipe, my 200# compound xbow is a little scary to cock and load. Don't think I'd have the courage to try a ballista but I'd love to see one shoot.

The SCA siege engineers construct their ballistas using leaf springs from old ford pick up trucks for the limbs.

I had a 200 pounder years ago, SAS for sentry removal, complete with bayonet. I had to stand on the limb to string it. Made quarrels out of a wooden practice arrow. Using a phone book as a target. They would penetrate half way and then the wooden shafts would shatter to splinters.
