This is a rifle I built for my friend Randy here. His forebears were in Rowan Co, NC from 1769 to 1803. He wanted a rifle that they might have known there. He chose a Henry Bruner (Whisker et all, "Gunsmiths of the Carolinas 1660-1870). (Also in "Kentucky Rifles and Pistols 1750-1850. I built another custom rifle based on the one on page 155). I used a Manton lock and a .40 cal B Weight (38") Colerain barrel. Jack Garner cut the stock from my pattern, and shaped it! I really like his work. I made the rifle smaller than the 44" original, because Randy's wife and kids are going to shoot this, too. He made the sterling silver patchbox.

Fine work, Herb. Looks like a beauty. Nice touch with the incise carving. Now that your friend Randy has his, how about makin one for me? ::

In this photo the stock looks black, but it is really a nice dark brown. I used Fiebing's dark brown Professional Oil Dye, for leather. Put on one coat. I like it for dark brown. If I can make Photobucket work again, I'll send a picture of Randy with this rifle, which will show its true color. I then put on two coats of MinWax 209 natural sealer. Used to use Laurel Mtn. Forge Permalyn sealer, but it would harden in the can before I needed it again. MinWax can be the finish by itself, but I put on 4 coats of Tung oil. Never use linseed oil.
